House Officers Long Term Disability Insurance Program

Without income protection, a disability can mean personal economic hardship to any physician.  A special program has been developed for the GME to provide income protection during your training and upon completion. 

Coverage While In Training

Group Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD)

  • Coverage provided by DMC to all active House Officers
  • Premiums paid by DMC; benefits received are taxable
  • Monthly benefit is 60% of monthly salary (maximum $4,000 per month)
  • 180 day elimination period
  • Benefit paid to age 65
  • Employee Assistant Program (EAP)

Individual Disability Insurance Options to Supplement Your Group LTD

  • Individual policy; fully portable
  • Premiums paid by House Officer; benefits received are tax-free
  • Guarantee Issue insurance without evidence of medical insurability*
  • Own Occupation Specialty definition of disability
  • DMC unisex rates and level premiums that are guaranteed for the life of your policy
  • Temporary Visa holders are eligible for this coverage
  • 90 day elimination period
  • Benefit paid to age 67

  • Available to you anytime during your residency until your final year of training

  • $2,000 monthly benefit with $8,000 Future Purchase Option
  • Available to existing Fellows, when you accept a fellowship with the DMC, or another institution
  • Catastropic Disability Benefit rider available
  • Guarantees access to the Graduate Plan your final year of the GME program
